Richard S. Lackey.  Cite Your Sources..Jackson MS, University Press of Mississippi, 1980.
This is a good, simple, inexpensive paperback manual for documenting family histories and genealogical records. Read the intro for its encouragement of proper procedures especially for a nonprofessional, nonscholar or genealogical hobbyist.

Kate L. Turabian. A Manual for Writers. Chicago, University of Chicago Press, -- I have the fifth edition, 1987. No doubt there are newer ones, especially where internet and digital documentation needs to be provided.
In an inexpensive paperback, Turabian guides you to a finished formal manuscript acceptable at the university level.
